Most of my family lives in Indiana or Ohio. This meant long car rides growing up that, being a 7 or 8 year old kid, were excrusiating. One of the first gifts I remember receiving was my GameBoy Advance. It made the trips much less painful when I could play my Pokemon, DragonBall and Mario games.

I started with the essential components we received from the library, Raspberry Pi 3 B+, Raspberry Pi Case, 32 GB Micro SD Card, USB MicroSD Card Reader, HDMI Cable, Micro USB Power Supply, Mini Wireless Keyboard, Wireless Keyboard Charging Cable, and the Raspberry Pi On/Off Switch. I used my laptop as the screen and because I had troubles getting a controller to work through my laptop, I ended up just using my keyboard to control the GBA.

I looked up the best way to get RetroPi and RetroPi.org.uk appeared to be the best and easiest to install. It didn’t take very long to download and I was able to move on to writing the code.

Through my research, mostly watching videos on YouTube, I was able to write the code through Etcher. After a couple videos, it was easy to write the code for the GBA. https://www.balena.io/etcher

Transferring the roms was when I ran into some problems. I tried several websites and didn’t get much luck. Some of the websites I accessed gave me malware or viruses, while almost all of them were ineffective in downloading. Finally, after yet more searching on YouTube, I found downloadroms.io. I was quickly able to download my favorite games like Pokemon Emerald, Super Mario Bros. 3 and DragonBall Z – Buu’s Fury. All games I played on my long car rides.

Having a GameBoy Advance on my laptop has been a lot of fun, especially while quarantined, I’ve been playing a lot of Pokemon Emerald. This project was intimidating at first, being someone who really didn’t have any experience in programming. It was a lot of fun and I was able to learn a lot through this project!
