Introduction

Computers in this day and age are getting infinitely more advanced. It has gotten to the point that it takes advanced knowledge to perform even the most basic of functions. For those who do not wish to spend hours of their time frustrated attempting to troubleshoot regular computers, Raspberry Pi is the answer. These micro computers can preform basic tasks like taking pictures or recording video without running a full fledged operating system. For my project, I have decided to make use of this software to emulate older video games that cannot be played on newer systems.

Items Required for the Project:

Hardware:

  • Raspberry Pi 4 motherboard with 8 GB of RAM
  • 32 GB Micro SD card
  • HDMI to micro HDMI cable
  • Power supply
  • Heatsink set
  • Flash drive with pre Installed Retro Pie OS
  • Controllers from various consoles
  • Case for motherboard
  • Computer monitor

Manuals/Guides:

  • Vilros gaming quick start guide for hardware installation
  • Retro Pi website for OS information (https://retropie.org.uk/download/)
  • Tom’s Hardware Website for general overview of Retro Pi (https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/install-retropie-raspberry-pi-4)

Project Details

Retro Pi was designed for gamers to be able to play older video games that no longer work on newer generation systems. My project uses the Raspberry Pi OS to manage and easily install this software into one place to have all of these older games into one archive. I was able to install this software onto my SD card with little to no trouble at all and I am now able to play any retro game all the way from the SNES to consoles as current as the Nintendo 3DS.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Retro Pi system is a great way for those who want to play older games without having to spend thousands of dollars on consoles, games , and accessories. Overall, I really enjoyed this experience. Coming from a moderate understanding of computers, I felt that this is a really fun and simple way for those who may be interested in learning about the innerworkings of computers to get involved without having to spend a ton of money on computer parts or spend hours reading over manuals and webpages.
