Hey everyone! Today I will be guiding you through making your own Smart Mirror. For those of you who don’t know, the idea of a smart mirror is to have a mirror – obviously – that can display information like weather, news headlines, your calendar, etc. This project is a medium difficulty type project and may or may not require much expense, depending on what you have around your house.

First off let’s look at the parts you will need for the project.

  • Raspberry Pi 3 (wifi or bluetooth equipped)
    • You can get this kit off of Amazon
  • MicroSD card w/ adapter
    • Running Raspian
  • Power cord
  • HDMI cable
  • Computer monitor
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • See through mirror (needs to fit your computer monitor)
    • I used this one from Amazon, its not the best quality version, there are nicer ones that cost a bit more, but if this is going to go in a nice prominent area you may want to look at a higher quality mirror
  • Wood to frame in the sides of your monitor and cover the front face plastic of the monitor

There are some great video tutorials on Youtube that will walk you through the project start to finish, the one I have used is here. It doesn’t go into great detail on the woodworking portion, so if you need additional help on that you may want to look into some other woodworking videos or ask any friends who could help. This was actually my first Raspberry Pi project and I don’t have much coding experience, so I’m sure you guys will be able to get this up and running like I did.

Once you have the Raspberry Pi up and running. the easiest way to get the Smart Mirror system going is to go to MagicMirror2. They provide an open source software and quick links to run the software on your Pi. Below is a great video showing off the Magic Mirror from their site.

Their site also gives you links to GitHub to add in different modules. There are tons of options, from additional weather or calendar options, to Jeopardy to add-on.

This project was a lot of fun. I am still putting the finishing touches on the frame for the mirror, but now that I have the MagicMirror software customized the way I want, and the mirror material cut to size, once I have the frame finished and painted, I can get the final product hung up. Hope you enjoy this project as much as I did!
