Hey, everyone! I ended up making everything work and BOOM! I now have a network monitor running Nagios on my Raspberry Pi right at home! Usually, I’d have NagiOS start up at the boot instead of Raspian, but here, we’re gonna have it so NagiOS works WHILE Raspian is up!

“But Jerick, why a Network Monitor? What’s the point of not just having it boot up?”

Glad you asked! (I hope) With networks being compromised and with this being my first shot of watching over my network as a rookie, this will help me and anyone else looking to watch over their network a chance to see what’s happening within their environment! There’s also the convenience of everything happening where I can have the Pi multitask while I’d be able to access Nagios remotely.

“What do I need?!”

  • Raspberry Pi 3 (RPi3) Model B Quad-Core 1.2 GHz 1 GB RAM or lower, I believe.
  • On-board WiFi and Bluetooth Connectivity, Ethernet works too.
  • USB MicroSD Card Reader and USB card, preferably around 4GB at least?
  • CanaKit 2.5A Micro USB Power Supply with Noise Filter (UL Listed) specially designed for the Raspberry Pi 3 (5-foot cable)

There’s extra fluff that you can use like having a case to protect it, HDMI cables to hook it up to a monitor for a visual aid. I believe that you can do it without but to save us a headache, use a monitor and hook the Pi up to an HDMI! You’ll thank yourself later. All of this good stuff can be found here for a good price: https://www.amazon.com/CanaKit-Raspberry-Complete-Starter-Kit/dp/B01C6Q2GSY

“Okay, I’ve got the stuff on the ready! Now what?”

Okie Doke! What I’ve used for this project were these links that were SUUUUPER helpful. Please don’t do what I did and go through the trouble of making a WordPress server by “accident” instead of finding clear and solid instructions as to what to do. Ouch.

What I loved about this project was how easy everything was after the initial gripe of having to work on something so new through the quarantine period. I ended up loving this project SOOO much that I have so much more in store for it. Big recommendation? PLEASE please please back up your files, look at youtube videos and other documentations, give it another day or so for your search because you might just find that tutorial that can save your life! I also wanted to have a cool little “at home” thing where I’d be more appreciative/enthusiastic into being a Network Admin in the future, might as well make something at home that’s cool and works with my aspiring job, right?
