The project I decided on for my Raspberry Pi was quite a simple one, but still very cool and interesting if I do say so. It’s the colliding of past and present as nostalgia invades the senses; you’re brought back to a simpler time via the technological resources and advances offered to us today.

The only components needed for this project are: a Raspberry Pi kit and a USB gaming controller–I used a Sony PlayStation controller and it worked perfectly.

To begin, I downloaded a program called “Etcher” to be able to burn the disc images as windows does not support this function on its own. I then downloaded “RecalBox” to use as the emulator and it worked very well with no problems. “RecalBox” comes preset with a catalog of games from different classic systems to choose from. I was able to set up this project without the need for a video tutorial, just a little Googling as I’ve done a similar project before and just needed a bit of refreshing.

The best thing about this project is how much fun you can have with it. It’s such a warm feeling being instantly brought back to a time in your life when you didn’t have a care in the world. Your weekend routine was to head straight for the game console and not look up until your mom was calling you for dinner and then you went right back to it after stuffing your face as fast as possible. What fun we had.

The emulator has several different classic systems to scroll through including: SEGA, Commodore, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo and Super Nintendo. Each system selection comes preset with a few of the most popular games for the console so you can start playing immediately.

This project was a lot of fun and really quite simple; my two favorite things. Below I’ve provided a link to a video of an overview of RecalBox (the emulator used for this project.) Overall I’m quite satisfied with how everything turned out and I learned how much I enjoy working with technology. Great things to come!
